The 3 50 Project to save local businesses

The 3/50 Project: Saving Local Businesses

Do you think about where your money goes when you buy items or dine out? With small local businesses struggling against big chains, it’s crucial to support your community.

A new “buy local” movement has emerged from Minneapolis called the 3/50 Project. Its goal is to save the foundations of our nation—brick and mortar stores.

How does it work? Consumers choose three local businesses they would miss if they closed and commit to spending $50 a month (combined) at those stores.

The 3/50 Project doesn’t insist consumers stop shopping at chain stores. We simply ask you to redirect an affordable $50 to the locally owned businesses that have been forgotten.

According to the website, 68 percent of every dollar spent in a local business stays in the local economy through taxes, payroll, and other expenses. In comparison, only 43 percent stays local when you purchase from a national chain.

The 3/50 Project has gained national support from businesses, consumers, and organizations, who are hosting events and community projects across the country.

Palo Alto Software and Rick L’Amie of Moxie Marketing in Austin, Texas, have partnered to support an event. Moxie issued a B2B challenge to Austin business owners, offering a chance to win Marketing Plan Pro and a 30-Day Moxie Quick Start Coaching program.

If you’re in Austin, enter the 3-Step Buy Local Challenge by listing three local businesses and explaining why you like them. If not, support your neighbors by spending your money at local stores and businesses. It’s a simple way to help your local economy.
