6 Tips for Running a Successful Kickstarter Campaign
If you want to start a business, the ideal way would be to have people give you their money based on your idea.
This is how Kickstarter works. Seems too good to be true? In most cases, it probably is.
Unless you’re campaigning for a revival of Reading Rainbow, you’re not going to raise $1 million in one day. But there are ways to run a successful Kickstarter campaign.
Here are six tips for using a Kickstarter campaign to help you get your company off the ground.
1. Have a compelling idea
Make sure you believe in your project before starting a campaign.
You need a reason why someone should help you out. Remember, you’re selling your idea and your story. People might like what your project will be, but they may be more interested in being a part of creating something new. If you have a strong story, people will want to play a part in it.
Keep in mind that even if you have a good idea, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s right for Kickstarter. For example, make sure you don’t ask for money for something you can make happen yourself.
2. Stay in contact with your backers
Posting updates and sharing your progress satisfies those who have helped you and might convince others to contribute as well. If it seems like you don’t care about how the Kickstarter is going, then why should they?
Make it clear you care about those supporting you by answering comments and messages, and keeping your backers in the loop.
3. Reward your supporters
Set up rewards for people who donate more than a certain amount. Put your company’s logo on hats, t-shirts, or other merchandise, and hand them out to donors who give, for example, more than $25. This gives people a reason to donate and fosters a sense of community, along with advertising.
Depending on your product, you can have fun with this. For example, parts supplier CJ Pony Parts offered major donors a free day with a new 2015 Mustang. That’s something to get excited about.
Make sure your rewards are realistic and you can pay for them.
4. Set deadlines
Showing supporters that you’re meeting deadlines is another way of rewarding them.
Novelty shirts and trinkets are nice, but demonstrating that your project is on track fosters trust. It also shows potential contributors that you are serious about getting your project done.
Set deadlines you know you can reach. Missing deadlines can create a feeling of doubt in donors’ minds, killing the buzz you’ve built up.
5. Be professional
Keep your campaign organized, on track, and frequently updated. Treat your contributors with respect.
If you present a professional page, donors will have more faith in your abilities. This confidence will speak for itself with their wallets. Stand out by showing how seriously you take their investment.
6. Market your project
A good idea alone will not make your campaign a success. It’s up to you to make sure people know about it. This means finding the balance between getting the word out and annoying everyone on your social media feeds.
If you’re truly passionate about what you’re creating, show it. No one will care about your Kickstarter if they can’t tell that you do.
Show your passion — it could prove to be contagious.
